Warwick castle and the River Avon

Warwick offers visitors an exciting blend of old and new, as over 1000 years of history are incorporated fully and sensitively into the modern vibrant county town of Warwickshire.

Originally founded in the 10th century to defend against Danish invaders, Warwick was a strategically important town guarding roads and river crossings. The impressive castle still stands intact and defiant above the River Avon today.

Much of the town centre was destroyed by the great fire of 1694, but significant examples of medieval architecture remain at the Guildhall (now the Lord Leycester Hospital) and around Oken's House. St. Mary's church was partially rebuilt following the fire and sits comfortably amongst contemporary buildings in warm red brick and yellow stone.
